Top 10 modern muscle cars: our rating

The muscle cars theme was relaunched in the middle of 2000 along with new Ford Mustang in 2005. So there are a few modern muscle cars in the market, a wide variety of Mustangs, Challengers and Chargers from Dodge, and Camaro from Chevrolet. The range is not so huge as back in the 60s, but still there are many custom muscle car builders. Here is our top 10 modern muscle cars by performance.

#10 2015 Ford Mustang GT

The new generation Mustang GT debuted only recently, has pretty impressive performance characteristics – from zero to sixty in just 4.3 seconds, quarter mile in 12.7 sec. 2015 Mustang GT equipped with 5-liter V8 engine producing 435 HP and 400 ft lb of torque.

In modern times legendary Charger has added one more pair of doors but haven’t lost it’s power and speed. Moreover, with the recent restyling it get true agressive appearance. 392 modification is faster than previous generation SRT-8, with 0-60 time of 4.2 sec and 12.6 quater results. Thanks to huge Dodge 6.4L V8 engine producing 470 HP and the same amount of torque.

You could name it Charger stepbrother, bearing the same numbers in name, however appeared to be more muscular. With the same 6.4L V8 engine, Challenger has 15 HP more – 485 HP. So, if you need to choose between Charger and Challenger and don’t need two extra doors, it’s better to stick with Challenger.

One more Challenger in our top list, and it’s not something unusual – SRT division of Dodge brand made so many variations of Chargers and Challengers, sometimes it’s hard to distinguish which one is the best. SRT8 Core version is definitely not the quickest Challenger available, but has some interesting features. Core was made specially for racing enthusiasts, available only with Orange and Plum colors, similar colors were used in original 1970 Dodge Challenger. Just like the original from 70s, Challenger SRT8 Core was made for power and speed: acceleration time is 4.0 sec, 1/4 mile in just 12.5 seconds.

One more nostalgic note – now from Ford. Original 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302 was famous for compact but powerful engine, good handling and special color scheme. In modern days all those ingredients have kept. Mustang Boss 302 equipped with 444 HP 5.0L V8 and it takes 4 seconds to 60 and 12.3 for quarter. Boss 302 was a limited edition car, so now it is unavailable on sale.

#5 2015 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Z28 is a magic combination of letter and two digits for any muscle car enthusiasts. Modern Z28 could easily beat the original one – thanks to technical innovations, though with the same recipe – lightweight body and massive V8. Numbers are following: 0-60 in 4.0, 1/4 mile in 12.2.

That is why modern Camaro ZL1 get 6.2L supercharged V8 from Corvette producing 556 HP and the same amount of torque. No wonder acceleration time is less than 4 seconds (3.9) and quater in 12.0 seconds. Not to mention impressive 184 mph top speed.

#3 2014 Shelby GT500

Ford answer to Camaro ZL1 challenge – 5.8L supercharged V8 producing 662 horsepower. As a result, pretty impressive performance characteristics – 3.5 seconds from zero to sixty and quarter mile in 11.5 seconds. Top speed is 189 miles per hour. Obviously not so rare as original 1967 Shelby GT500, but much faster indeed.

This name doesn’t make a sound, exterior design looks like a wild combination of Mustang and Challenger, with a light notes of 1970s Camaro in between. Despite the looks, Equus has tremendous performance – thanks to 6.2L V8 Corvette ZR1 engine. It gives the car 640 HP and 605 ft lb of torque, leads to 0-60 acceleration in just 3.4 seconds. However, there is a serious drawback – price starting at $250,000. Too high even for an exclusive muscle car.

Our chart number one and the most powerful muscle car in production – Hellcat modification of the new Challenger. Supercharged V8 producing unbelievable 707 HP and 650 lb ft of torque allows accelerate to sixty in 3.5 seconds. 199 mph top speed place the car in a much higher class of at least Corvette. It is really a ultimate muscle car for this time, which is also looks just great.
